X-rays are used in a dynamic, real-time fashion, providing both anatomical and functional information. Common procedures to investigate the gastrointestinal tract include barium swallows, meals and enemas, as well as defecating proctograms, while cystograms, micturating urethrograms and intravenous pyelograms (IVPs) are employed to assess the genitourinary tract. 

Hysterosalpingography is performed as part of infertility workup.

Imaging of the salivary glands can be performed by injecting a water-soluble contrast agent into the ductal systems of these structures.
